How To Beat Writer’s Block
The written word is one we use to display a variety of different messages. Whether you are trying to update your clients on the latest company changes, or simply creating a new employee job listing — sometimes the words can escape you. And trust us, it happens to everyone!
However, when that pesky writer’s block sinks in, it can be hard to avoid the temptation of simply moving on to another task and leaving it for another day. Sometimes the deadlines just don’t allow for this change of daily workload. And at the moment, you might feel like you just can’t figure out the right words to put down. We promise — you can! Especially if you put your mind to the task.
The truth is, even our strongest content writers get writer’s block from time to time. However, there are tools to help when you need to overcome it. Here’s what to consider:
Eliminate Distractions
It’s important that you put yourself in an environment free of distractions so that you can center your mind around your work. For whatever reason you’re writing for, any kind of interruption can derail your train of thought and set you back. Find a space that is quiet and clean, where you know you can work to your full potential. If your day is full of back-to-back meetings or you find yourself too busy to sit for long, consider moving the task to a later date.
Map Out Your Ideas
Outlines never hurt anybody! They help a lot, making it easier for you to put your initial ideas down so that you have something to work off of. From presentations to work emails, mapping out your ideas can help on any project. And if you don’t know where you want to take it, then it’s best to get your words down anyway so you don’t lose a single idea. In fact, we outlined this blog!
Know When to Step Away
Never force yourself to sit down and write when you know you absolutely are not feeling it. It can be as simple as stepping away to take a walk or grabbing a meal. Do NOT make yourself stay put until you’ve come up with something. This can be counterproductive, as your mind will feel less motivated to do a task it’s being essentially forced to do. This can even apply to important emails. Sometimes it’s best to keep a draft in order to go back and reread it with a fresh pair of eyes. You never know what a new perspective could bring.
Go Out of Order
Find yourself staring at the blank page, not knowing where to start? Try beginning with the idea that comes to you first, not necessarily the order it will read in. When it comes time to do a presentation or map out a contract, you don’t have to necessarily piece it together from A to Z. You can start with page B if it’s more familiar and then go back to the parts you need more time developing. This will help get you into a flow. Consider even recording your thoughts out loud, so that you can go back, listen, and write as you go. We all need to start somewhere, just go back and do the other parts after you finish those you’re ready for.
