What would you do for 100,000 facebook fans? How far would you go for 1 million twitter followers?  Would you get in the ring and duke it out with MMA fighters for it?

In a recent article from Steven Marrocco, sports illustrated columnist, describes how the MMA is embracing the Social Media Craze. UFC president Dana White, sat down with UFC fighters explaining how they will all individually tweet and self-promote with social networking. He began to explain how twitter is your friend, and gives you space to promote, interact and inform with fans directly. Dana stated, “I want you guys to Twitter, Facebook, get your name out there.” Lightweight Jeremy Stephens said, “In this business, you only last so long as a fighter. It’s your job to fight hard to make a name for yourself.”

Some can even argue that sites like Twitter and Facebook have made professional fighting more exciting than ever to watch. They are starting to insult and call out each other and making respectful agreements via twitter to fight each other. This gives fans the inside access to be in the heat of the argument and then watch them take it to a physical level. Actions speak louder than words, but words certainly build up actions.

Now day’s there’s only so much time fighters can devote to training without completely burning out. With time to kill, using social media is a way for them maintain sanity and remind fans they do, in fact, still exist. There are seven divisions now in the UFC, and they’re changing faster than ever. Making noise, it seems, is the most direct way to stay in the conversation.
