Responsive Web Design FAQs

What is Responsive Web Design?

Rather than designing separate sites for desktops, tablets and phones, responsive web design will create an ideal viewing experience by addressing all of them; creating a design users will be familiar with as they migrate across devices. Google has formally endorsed Responsive Web Design as their favored method for building websites.

Why should I switch my website to Responsive Design?

Let’s face it, people approach the internet in a totally different way than they did just a few years ago. Once you make the design responsive, the website will look good on all screens – not just desktops. This will save time, as you don’t need to manage separate websites for desktops and mobile phones. If done correctly, when you make an edit it will automatically reflect on every version.

You will also receive unified data of mobile and desktop users in your Google Analytics reports. Now that all versions of your website will have a singular URL, you will get concentrated social sharing statistics as well.

How will Responsive Website Design help me get more customers?

One word: conversions. If your website is unappealing and difficult to maneuver between devices, you are going to receive more bounces than conversions. Users have become more impatient. Show them a messy website with little thought into user experience, and they will leave the page without any information. If your design and function are integrated to develop a concise goal that the user can easily follow, the user will retain more information.

How do I check if a website has a Responsive Design?

This is very simple. Open a website in any desktop browser and resize the browser. If the layout changes as you resize it then the design is responsive.

Can you share examples of some good websites that are Responsive?

This has become the industry norm, so there are quite a few places where you can see responsive design layouts being used. Below are some examples responsive layouts created by Ferocious Media:

1: Jan-Pro Cleaning Systems

Does Responsive Design work well with Google?

Google has decided that website user experience will be a large element in page rankings. Earlier this year, Google disclosed that their mobile search engine results pages will experience an algorithm change that will reward mobile-optimized websites with a higher organic ranking, while websites that are not simple to browse from a mobile device will suffer from earning a low organic ranking.  Google’s algorithms for mobile devices were updated on April 21, 2015, making now is the time to convert to responsive web design.

Will it affect my Search Engine Rankings?

Search engines take many variables into account, including keywords, links, and structure. Between Google’s new algorithm and conversion rates, Responsive Design plays into your rankings quite a bit. User experience directly affects the site’s popularity. Popularity is interpreted as a signal for higher quality. If the site promotes sharing, bookmarking and return visits, these are all signs for search engines to enhance your ranking.
