The Importance of Mental Well-Being While Working Remotely

Mental well-being is important for everyone, and it’s a subject that we’ve been exploring this month at Ferocious. We all know the benefits of working from home: less stress from commuting, more flexible hours, and extra time with family. However, no matter how much easier it may seem, working from home can take a toll on your mental health over time.

From not being able to see your co-workers daily to trying to manage a good work-life balance, our team has been through it all and has some important tips for you to ensure you’re putting your mental health first.

Structured Breaks Are Essential

It’s essential to take breaks when needed, so you don’t get burnt out by focusing for hours on end! Our Senior Social and Content Manager, Courtney Fagan, explains, “I find that I do my best when I take little breaks throughout the day. I’ll take my dogs for quick walks or take a minute to do some breathing exercises.” If you don’t allow yourself these regular breaks throughout the day, work can feel like it’s piling up, and you might not even be able to finish everything you need to.

Courtney continues, “If I’m really struggling to get a task done, it’s more helpful to step away for a bit than force myself to keep going. That only causes a lack of motivation, I find. But when I return after a quick, structured break, I’m coming back to my work with a new set of eyes.”

Designate an Office Space in Your Home

Sure — it may be tempting to work from your living room or bedroom, but doing so can hinder you from mastering the art of a work-life balance. When it’s time to unwind at the end of the workday, you might find it difficult to relax — especially when your workstation is situated right in front of your couch or bed.

If you do not have an actual home office, get creative and designate a space to be your “office.” Our Director of Social & Content, Brendan McLaughlin, explains, “Since the start of the pandemic, I’ve been working from home. However, I live in a small house — space is limited; I have to get creative. That said, I cleaned up an area in my basement and “set up shop.” This is a great way for me to “leave work at work” and kick back and relax when I shut my monitors off at the end of my day.”

Schedules and To-Do Lists Are Your Best Friend

It can be easy to get lost in a task or a project for hours on end when working from home. When you can’t see your co-workers right in front of you, it’s easy to forget that you need to meet with a teammate or jump on a call with a client. This is where scheduling comes in.

Digital Advertising Manager, Erica Chludzinski, shares, “My Google Calendar and personal planner are my saviors when it comes to organizing my day and keeping me productive. I can schedule calls and time-block projects so that I can get all my work done without forgetting an important meeting or assignment.”

Erica continues, “Virtual to-do lists or even a paper notepad can help me remember everything I want to accomplish, and my calendar helps me find the time I need to do it all. Without scheduling my workdays, I find myself complaining that there’s not enough time in the day!”
